Sapin de Noël (Christmas tree) and the crèche (nativity scene) are the main Christmas décors in France. Apples, flowers and ribbons adorn these trees as per the tradition that dates back in the 14th century. For the French, the tree symbolizes Christ as the ‘light that illuminates the world’. Being a predominantly Catholic nation, the practice of setting a crèche is widely grasped in Spain as well. Their un belén (nativity scene) is not composed of the main characters alone, most depict the entire village of Bethlehem!

The Philippines, having been under the care of Spain for more than 300 years,

adopted this Christmas tradition as well. The belén is an essential (even mandatory) Christmas display in every home. This star-shaped lighting epitomizes the Star of Bethlehem and is a symbol of goodwill and hope for the Filipinos.

Lighting becomes a symbol of this season for other countries as well. Christians in
